In Breaking News–The Government Arrogantly Ignores Itself

Reading Time: 2 minutes

As promised, Normal Service has been resumed.

I went to sleep last night trying, and failing, to read the report issued by the Public Accounts Committee.

When I woke up this morning it was all over the news.  Even the BBC was having a dig, they’ve improved just a little since the government threw the word ‘Reform’ at the Beeb, now they know what everybody else is talking about.

I digress, the Public Accounts Committee contains such nuggets as

  • The impact of cuts on police forces in England and Wales is far greater than the government realises
  • Forces did not sufficiently understand demands, including how these were increasing as other services were cut.
  • Forces outsourcing to make savings did not know if they were getting value for money.
  • “Too often cuts to services lead to ‘cost shunting’ with the police acting as the default support provider.  “There’s little understanding in the Home Office and in many forces of local demands.”

The committee, in its highly critical report,  called on the Home Office to rethink its part of the formula to take into account the different circumstances in each area.

Have no fear, as you might expect, the government has responded, wheeling out the big guns;

Policing Minister, Mike Penning, said “Police reform is working. Over the last five years, frontline services have been protected, public confidence in the police has gone up and crime has fallen by more than a quarter over the past five years.”

Crime has fallen?  Ask the residents of Maidenhead where Saint Theresa presides, Crime in Maidenhead has risen Home Secretary, I’m surprised you don’t know that.

So let that be an end to it all you deniers of the bleeding obvious out there, despite the views of the Public Accounts Committee and the National Audit Office before them, the government is right to ignore itself and when you go to bed tonight, close the curtains, put out the light and say a little prayer to Saint Theresa of Maidenhead

“Police Reform is Working, the Front Line has been Protected”

  1. The front line is being protected. Police reform is working.
“If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State.”

  2. Gordon Williamson

An well, I suppose we can expect little else from them.
It is ironic that they expect honesty, integrity and courage from humble public servants but our exalted leaders obviously feel those qualities are beneath them. I’m sure they will console themselves by drowning their sorrows and will of course get a cab home (sorry 2nd home) and it will all be at public expense!
